Introduction

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala is the Medical Director, Chief of Surgery and the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Mumbai-based P.D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre. He ranked first in MBBS as well as in MS (Orth) from the University of Bombay. He obtained his M.Ch degree in Orthopedic Surgery from the University of Liverpool, U.K., and here he was awarded the Norman Roberts Medal.

Additionally, he has received several national & international fellowships and awards, some of which are:

  • The International Graduate Fellowship Award of the Rotary Foundation USA.
  • Hand and Microsurgical Fellowship, Derby, UK.
  • The Stanley Johnson Microsurgical Fellowship Award, Harrow, UK.
  • The Journal of Associations of Physicians of India (JAPI) awarded him the J.C. Patel – B.C. Mehta award-2001.

Dr. Agarwala has conducted several teaching programmes to the Orthopaedic faculty all over India. Under his chairmanship there is DNB training in Orthopaedics recognised by the National Board where post graduate students in Orthopaedics are trained at Hinduja Hospital.

He was the Chairman of the AO Foundation Western India Chapter for teaching of fracture management, and the Hinduja Hospital was then recognized as an AO Centre of excellence, one of the only 5 in the country at that time.

His main areas of interest are joint replacement surgery, where he is a pioneer in performing normal physiology joint replacements. Patients can resume activities like yoga and exercises after surgery with a close to normal and improved quality of life.

Dr. Agarwala specializes in fractures, trauma and joint replacement surgeries and therefore is an ADULT RECONSTRUCTIVE ORTHOPEDIC SPECIALIST.

He also performs arthroscopic surgery of the knee, complex fracture fixation using the Swiss AO techniques, re-implantation and micro surgical work for limb salvage and restitution. Being conversant with the use of the surgical microscope, Dr. Agarwala had initiated the programme offering Micro Lumbar Discectomy and Holmium Laser Discectomy for selected cases.

He has shown that auto transfusion and the use of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin reduces the need for blood transfusion in hip and knee surgeries. His dissertation for the M.Ch.Orth examination, 1985, University of Liverpool on nerve conduits that can be used instead of nerve grafts, was awarded the Norman Roberts Medal at the examination. He has two original papers in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Agarwala’s bench-mark research on Deep Vein Thrombosis in Arthroplasty surgery, the first such in India, has resulted in 5 major publications, and has established the prevalence and incidence of this dreaded condition in Indian orthopedic patients. With the parameters suggested, it is possible to cut down on the incidence and morbidity of this condition in Indian patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

The Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology in 2001 has published an article on Box Osteotomy of the Tibia as a “new technique” in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee, often an alternative to knee replacement for younger patients. His results with plating for the box osteotomy have been published in 2008 issue of the Journal of Orthopedics.

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala has successfully used Alendronate, a Bisphosphonate to treat AVN of the hip for the last 15 years with great success. Alendronate is most commonly used to treat osteoporosis prevents bone resorption. This has been reported in the journal of Rheumatology 2005 issue, in the JBJS 2009, and more recently in the Journal of Arthroplasty, October 2011. Relief was seen within a few weeks and 80% of patients became freely ambulant.

That Indian patients who aspire for full function as Indians after surgery from him, can and will be able to do so. His publication in 2014 on the Functional outcome following a large head total hip arthroplasty are testimony to this. Dr. Agarwala has 50 other publications in peer reviewed scientific publications. He is the only Orthopedic Surgeon who has publications in journals other than Orthopedics viz. Journal of Plastic Surgery, Journal of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Ultrasound Medicine as well.

He is also a Visiting Consultant at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, A former AO Chairman for Western India (Academic), and Founder Trustee and the Chairman of the Committee for the ISHKS meeting in Mumbai 2015.

From clinical excellence, surgical skill and basic research, Dr. Sanjay Agarwala has successfully blended the best of the East and the West to bring world class surgical facilities for the benefit of Indian patients.
